Books For The Form Of My Thesis
Save the Cat: The Last Screenwriting Book You Will Need
Blake Snyder (2005)
I am excited about this book as it is a quick and engaging read about screenwriting. I chose this book because it is a best-seller and it claims to give a comprehensive study of screenwriting techniques with a humorous tone.
Aristotle’s Poetics for Screenwriters
Michael Tierno (2002)
I highly enjoyed reading Aristotle’s Poetics in English 120. Therefore, I was extremely excited when I read that this book is based in Aristotle’s landmark dramatic theory. I look forward to this read as I have pondered employing the Aristotelian Unities to allow my story to take place in a single day in a single setting.
Writing the TV Drama
3rd Ed. Pam Douglas (Michael Weise Productions 2011)
This book looked helpful to learn how to write episodic television. While I am writing a miniseries, I plan to follow television format. Further, while I hope to include comedic moments in my scripts, I plan to write a drama. Therefore, I am very excited to read this book.
Books For The Content Of My Thesis
The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook: Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Surviving Boot Camp
Michael Volkin (2007 Savas Beatie 2nd ed)
I chose this book because I plan to write characters who have just survived boot camp. While I do not plan to write about boot camp, I believe this book will be a great resource to allow me to get in the heads of my characters and write about what they just experienced.
Basic Training for Dummies
Rod Powers (2011 Wiley & Sons)
I enjoy this series as they provide a comprehensive review of a subject with an informational yet approachable tone. I believe this book will supplement my above book as it will teach me about the variety of components related to boot camp.
Basic: Surviving Boot Camp and Basic Training
Jack Jacobs (2012 Thomas Dunn)
I liked this book because of its positive reviews on Amazon. While I will have already read the above two books on boot camp/basic training, I liked this book as it is written from the perspective of two soldiers who tell funny and poignant stories about their time in basic training.
From Here to Eternity
James Jones (1951)
I included this book as it is a classic book about base life and how war can change the life of a number of individuals affected by the military. While I am not writing a novel, I believe reading novels will help me in my character development and pacing as I write my miniseries.
Little Women
Louisa May Alcott (1869)
While this book has absolutely nothing to do with my content of a military base, I chose this classic because I believe it will improve my screenplay. This book is famed for its realistic and heartfelt portrayal of sisters. In my miniseries, I would like to write characters who have strong relationships-as if they were brothers and sisters. Therefore, I believe reading this text will help me as I write about characters’ relationships.
Married to the Military: A Survival Guide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, and Women in Uniform
Meredith Leyva (2009)
I chose this book because two of my characters, Amy and Mariana, will not be soldiers themselves but they will have relationships with men in uniform. I believe after reading this book I will be able to tell these stories with authenticity.
A Civilian’s Guide to the U.S. Military: A comprehensive reference to the customs, language and structure of the Armed Forces
Barbara and Richard Schading (2006)
Finally, I chose this book because I would like my miniseries to be realistic as possible. I believe learning about the customs, language, and structure of the military through this book will make my miniseries ring true to audiences.
